Rain, Rain, Rain-
On Roatán, we experience winter like everyone else. However, instead of a white winter, the winter here is wet. It’s what locals call the rainy season. Rainy season typically happens from October through January. Of course, with highs in the low 80ºs and lows in the 70ºs, there isn’t much to complain about (better wet, than white). The four months during the rainy season provide cool evenings and cooler days. During this time, rain fills underground wells, aquifers, and cisterns, which gather water from roofs.
Over the past thirty years, the average rainfall for October-January has averaged about 53″. However, this winter the average rainfall was about 93″. This large amount of rain shattered all previous records. In fact, this year we experienced more rain than the year of Hurricane Mitch (a hurricane that hit here 30 years ago), which was recorded as one of the highest rainfalls in island history. Yes, we measure hurricane frequency here in decades (not years) as hurricanes are very infrequent.
Lately, winds are shifting in from the east, and sunshine is gradually coming in. There are many road repairs that are now being completed by both the local and national governments. None of these improvements could be completed during the rainy season.
Real Estate Auctions-
This March we will have our first group of properties up for auction. This is the first time we have held a real estate auction. The auction looks like a good opportunity for Buyers who are Purchasers, who know the island, and who have been here. Any agreement that is written would have a Buyer approval contingency, and Buyers would make a trip to the island for final approval. Here is the link detailing what will be on the market. Canadian Donation in Conjunction with Sunrise Rotary –
Often times, developing countries do not have the budget or finances for emergency fire and ambulance vehicles and equipment needs. Visitors in that line of work from the United States and Canada often team up with charitable organizations such as Rotary International and donate their old equipment (which is brand new or non-existent in developing country standards).
