For some time now the country of Honduras started issuing a new version drivers license with an electronic chip in it. Unfortunately they did not have the new equipment on the island to issue the new version so if your license was going to expire you had to go to LaCeiba to get the new version. As of July 5th, this is the procedure as I know it. You need a medical exam, an eye test, (get them both at AKR for +/- $20.00), and two passport sized photos. You go to Banco Atlantida and pay L 600 for a five year license. They collect the L 600.00 then they make an appointment for you at the Police staition west of Coxen Hole where they issue the license. As you can see by the date this is a brand new procedure and I have no idea how smoothly it will go but the good news is you no longer have to go to LaCeiba.
