Roatan Honduras to Miami via Cayman Airways
Recently, I had to make quick trip to the States, and I thought I would check out tickets through Cayman Airways. I was pleasantly surprised that a ticket to Miami through Cayman Airways was about $400 less round trip than a ticket through American Airlines. Besides Miami, Cayman Airways also flies in the States to New York, Tampa, Chicago, and Dallas. Overall, I was very pleased with the savings and service. Change in Latitude, Change in Attitude!-

Many tourists visit Roatan for the first time when the cruise ship they are on lands at Mahogany Bay or the Port of Roatan. Avid divers make a point of visiting Roatan to discover pristine coral reefs teeming with sea life. Investors interested in a vacation homes or future retirement locations stop at the Bay Islands to imagine what island life might look like. Yet, the Bay Islands attract people for a multitude of reasons. People who are looking to escape the stress of a hyper political environment, oppressive tax structures for businesses, crime, and business pressures also come to Roatan.

Whatever your motivation, spending time on the Bay Islands can certainly be helpful. Change your latitude and you may very well, change your attitude, a plus for all.

News from Utila
For those who are not familiar with the Bay Islands, there are actually are 62 islands and cays (pronounced keys) included in the Bay Islands. Roatan and Utila are the most developed islands, and they are the places we focus on in this monthly newsletter.

That being said, Roatan and Utila are two VERY different places. Utila is far more laid back, smaller and less developed.

However, during the last year, Utila has benefitted from a ferry service, which travels to and from Roatan, and within the last month, a Fed-Ex has even opened on Utila.

I am sure you may not think that is “big news” but that said, for the people that are there and people who are thinking of being there it really is!

Roatan Oasis
Have you experienced a meal at Roatan Oasis? The variety of foods at this restaurant is both unusual and delightful. The menu at Roatan Oasis even includes lamb! Recently, my wife and I visited the Roatan Oasis on a Thursday evening, and we enjoyed the songs of an acoustic guitar player. Island Mechanic, Aldo

Regardless of where you live, everyone needs a dependable mechanic. Therefore, I wanted mention Aldo, my favorite mechanic on Roatan.

Located east of Jackson Plaza in Mt. Pleasant (on the same property but outside the mall itself), all the way in the back on the right hand side) is a young man by the name of Aldo. Aldo was trained in the States at car dealerships and can handle almost anything need. Also, Aldo has a complete computer kit to plug your car into, in order to assist him in evaluating problems. This is one of very few computerized kits on the island. My experience with Aldo has been very positive. If you need additional directions to his shop, stop by the RE/MAX Office located in the same Jackson Plaza, and ask. One of our staff members will get you to the right place.

Looking in your ‘other pocket’ for cash?

Something many people do not realize is they have an extra pocket. By that I mean that people who are planning retirement often look in their wallet to see the money available to them. However, I propose another pocket of money that many do not consider.

You may be one of over 50 million Americans who have IRA’s or 401K’s. Although each company that offer 401Ks have specific rules about withdrawals, many companies allow employees to roll money over into IRAs tax free.

Normally, that would take the form of putting money into a brokerage account where it can be invested in stocks, bonds, mutual funds, or money market accounts. However, what most people do not know is that they can also roll it over into a SDIRA or a Self-Directed IRA.

With a Self-Directed IRA, one can buy stocks, bonds, mutual funds or money market accounts, and in a conventional situation with the SDIRA, you can invest in anything you want to, including real estate here. Then when you retire and want to start building, you withdraw the ownership from the IRA to you personally and start building your retirement home.
