CATCH THE FISHING TOURNAMENT
The Roatan International Fishing Tournament will be October 8th through 11th this year. Later than the usual mid-September, centered around Honduran Independence Day. Those hardy fishermen were determined not to miss the thrill of the competition. How about you? Want to enter or find out what’s in store this year, then click here http://www.letsfishroatan.com/ to find out more details.
The Roatan International Fishing Tournament serves as an Offshore World Championship qualifying event and is supported by The International Game Fish Association.
This year is the 21st annual catch and release tournament (the first ever catch and release competition established in Honduras) and is the 13th consecutive event that has also partnered with The Billfish Foundation’s “tag and release” program in an effort to track the billfish in the area.
There are various categories and prices awarded to teams and individuals – the divisions include: billfish, rodeo, junior, grand slam, record breaking Blue Marlin (over 708lbs) and top lady angler.
Proceeds from this very popular event not only go toward promoting local, national, and international tourism, but also to several charities, including the usual RBC Insular; Roatan Hospital/Roatan Lions Club and Catteya School.

POWER TO THE PEOPLE
RE/MAX Newsletter October 2020 reports that modern technology is coming to Roatan. Our existing (and only) electricity provider Roatan Electric Company (RECO) has contracted Wärtsilä Energy Storage Technology to add an energy storage solution to its power plant. Work on the project has continued throughout the period of lockdown and is it is predicted to be operational before the end of 2020.
The addition of energy storage (controlled by a new energy management software) will provide additional flexibility to add users into the local grid and increase reliability.
The solar PV power plant project is already full steam ahead in French Harbour and will be delivered on a fast-track basis.
The storage system will provide reserve capacity needed to maintain stability of the island’s grid – over 20 percent of the delivered island energy will come from renewable sources. As the population and demand for electricity continues to increase, the implementation of this system is vital to improve, and sustain our supply as well as being more efficient and reliable, RECO will be able to provide more cost-effective electricity. Additionally, RECO has already put in place a 26-turbine wind farm, and a 6-mile underwater subsea cable to expand their distribution system to two nearby islands.
Thank you RECO!
