Roatan Hospital Fire – Little Friends Foundation
On April 19th, 2024, a devastating fire engulfed the sole public hospital on the island of Roatán, reducing the vital community institution to smoldering debris. Makeshift clinics were established, private homes opened their doors to those in need, and a network of support emerged to address the physical and emotional needs of the affected population. If you would like to make a donation, please contact Little Friends Foundation, a non-profit organization that is focused on children and medical needs for the island of Roatan.

A Short fact about Coxen Hole
The city was founded in 1835 when several British families moved to Roatán from the Cayman Islands. It is named after the pirate Captain John Coxen/Coxon due the fact that during the 17th century Roatán was once home to over 5,000 pirates living all through the island. British Caymanian slave-owners brought their slaves and seafaring culture to Roatan, forming a majority of the island’s permanent population. The Bay Islands were briefly declared a colony by the British empire in the 1850’s, though the territory was ceded to Honduras in the following decade.
