The ‘real estate’ bubble and financial woes of the U.S. has had noticeable effect on virtually every strip mall and large shopping mall in most parts of that country with many still locations with considerable vacancies. The same happened here and it seems to gradually be coming back.
For those not familiar with the island shopping here can be a great big question mark for almost anything that you may need.
In some ways and some places on the island it can be like it was more in the 50’s & 60’s with little shops for meat, seafood or bakery items if you wish that, and in other places you have large grocery stores that almost look like what you may have around the corner from your home, (a Publix, Kroger, or an HE Butt -though smaller). There are no ‘Super Stores here like a Super Target, K-Mart of Meijer’s). The best of these are the ‘Eldon’s’ stores in French Harbor and in Coxen Hole on the main road just west of the airport.
For those who are both on the island a lot or live here you may be familiar with ‘Jackson Plaza’. This is a small plaza in Mt. Pleasant, (just west of French Harbor). If you have not been there in a while you may wish to park and take a stroll through it in that over the past year+ it has changed a lot.
Davivienda Bank, (formally HSBC), Atocha Furniture, Cashsol, (which is the islands version of ‘Pawn Stars’ and my main RE/MAX office are across the front of the plaza but the inside has some great locations that you may wish to visit or at least may wish to know are there.
Inside there is a medical clinic with both a General Practioner and an OBGYN, (an office visit here is normally about L300 to L400 ($15 to $20 U.S.).
The offices for both Nissan and the KIA car dealership are also there. A local Attorney attorney, an animal feed store that also is a dealership for ‘Shindaina’ chain saws and weed wackers is inside, as is Truley Nolan Pest Control. The newest store there is a Beauty Shop called Zobeida’s that does the color, cut, nails that ladies always have their eyes open for.
Stop in at take a look the next time you are there.
