Good Deeds
Both islanders and foreign residents express generosity in many, many ways here on Roatan.
Rotary International
Roatan has one of the most active Rotary groups in Central America. This group does a great job in giving back to the island: scholarships for students, medical supplies, water and septic systems for local schools. You name it, they do it. The Rotary group meets every Thursday evening at 6:30. Find them in the Pineapple Grill Meeting Room at Pineapple Villas in French Harbor. If you are a Rotary member and are visiting the island of Roatan, make a point to visit your international fellow Rotarians.
Sol Foundation
School of Life (SOL) International Foundation is working to initiate and support community-based programs designed to promote education and increase the quality of life in developing areas. Sol Foundation is raffling off the opportunity for people to win a one-week stay here on Roatan at one of three beautiful homes (a condo in Pristine Bay on the golf course, a home in Turtle Crossing in West Bay, and a home in West End, above Sunset Villas). All homes sleep up to 6 people. There will only be 150 tickets. With three, one week stays to give away, that means a 1 in 50 chance of winning. Tickets are $100 and 100% of proceeds go to SOL. Tickets can be purchased through Kirsty Doig or Dave Elmore or online at solroatan.org (Then click on the DONATE NOW button. All $100 donations will be entered into the raffle). Winners must use their stay before the end of 2016. Some blackout dates do apply (like Christmas, New Year’s, etc.). Winners will be drawn at Sundowner’s on October 30th.
Cattleya School, French Cay
Raising a child with special needs is difficult for both the parent and child. However, here on Roatan, local parents have stepped up, found a great place in French Cay, and set up a school (a co-op in some ways) where everyone chips in to help with these very special people. If you have a place in your heart for people with special needs, visit the Cattleya School’s Facebook page and say hello. Vessels of Mercy-
Providing quality medical and dental care is a consistent need on the island of Roatan. One church from Lawrenceville, GA has been bringing teams for nearly a decade and helped to build the Vessels of Mercy Clinic located in French Cay. A vision for a clinic in French Cay was birthed out of a tragedy when a local pastor’s son was struck by a vehicle and died in transport to the hospital. The Lawrenceville Church of God first sent a team of builders in 2007 from Lawrenceville, GA to help build the clinic that now serves hundreds of people every month. More recently, another team of builders came in 2014 to help build a house for the doctor to live in behind the clinic. The Vessels of Mercy clinic offers solutions to the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual needs of families. Through a qualified staff of Medical Doctors and counselors, each need is identified and appropriate care is given. In addition, educational programs are offered to encourage healthier habits and living conditions.
